Design Considerations: Two apartments combined into one needed a new arrangement to blend together.

Design Approach: Combining apartments in New York is commonplace. However at this project on West End Avenue, we found an opportunity to open the middle to create a large welcoming area.

The most private areas were allocated to one side of the plan, which created more luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms. We reframed the entry, becoming smaller, but feeling larger as it opened up to a new grand living space. An awkwardly located column, pipes and bathroom became the foundation for feature elements within the center of the apartment including custom biofuel fireplace. The bathroom door was concealed behind a bookshelf, the pipes were brass plated and polished and serve as a gateway to the dining room.
