NYC Small Lot
Big spaces in small places
Inspiration
Design considerations: Similar to our Harlem 2-family project, this proposal for typical narrow lots do not have room for standard floor-by-floor apartment layouts.
Design approach: Like back-to-back handball courts in many city parks, we split the building into front and rear apartments with a stair in between. The neighbors share the corridor entrance and rear yard while the rest of the building is set up so that each floor has larger rooms with daylight where it needs to be, while circulation, closets and bathrooms are inset where daylight is not needed.
