Dreyhausenstrasse School
Soft underbelly with a porous shield.
Inspiration
Design Considerations: A new city school with both structured and flexible classrooms along with outdoor space and a gymnasium.
Design Approach: Looking at the traditional courtyard block layouts in Vienna, we organized the building with a rigid structure facing the street, like a layer of protection, with a soft underbelly, which encompasses more flexible interior and exterior spaces facing the large rear court (which has remnants of old structures therein). We also accounted for a rooftop for various activities including a basketball court. The classrooms all face the street to the north and flexible spaces to the interior.
Strategically to save space, ceiling thicknesses are compressed and the building services moved into the walls.
