Design Considerations: As an agency of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the ACF in New York represents a major hub of art and outreach to its host city. The building, completed in 2002, was designed by the world-renowned architect Raimund Abraham, now-deceased, and was widely praised both upon the unveiling of the design and the opening of the building. However, the iconic façade of this building had been leaking for years, yet the design details are seen as inspirational to the institution.
Design Approach: We worked hand-in-hand with Consulting Associates of New York (CANY) in retrofitting insulation and leak prevention solutions, recladding parts that were damaged and making the interior more comfortable. All of this was done with minimal interruption to the regular operation of the Cultural Forum and no change to the visible details of the failing façade.
